This blog will now become a Journal for my attachment so I can review what I have done and can use it for my final presentation and also for you to read of course. It should be very detailed and don't read it if you think you're wasting your time.



Day 2 10 March '09
Yesterday, we had to report at 9am but today its 8:30am the actual stated time of our work. Left home at 7:05am today.

Kit Yee is late again. Haha. NUH needs more shuttle buses. I went first to BME office. We did'nt have the access card to enter the office so I had to press the doorbell.
I watched a video of the Personal Protective Equipment, which all hospital staff have to learn how to wear it. Kit Yee came a few minutes later.
After watching the video we went to HR to submit a form there and went to Security dept. to get our access cards. Hehe now we can go (almost) anywhere. dont need press doorbell anymore. Li Xian had a meeting at 10am so we were left in the office to look at the NUH intranet which had lots of information about the services available and the different locations where we need to know where is where soon enough.
After browsing through the intranet, we approached Faizah, BME's Senior Administration Assistant to tell us what to do next. We're given more paper work. (yay?)... this time it was much harder to sort out. There were sheets of paper dating back to '06 and we had to file it in order according to a coded number. I shall not reveal any information. =) The documents were called Fault Report (FR). It was a tiring job and we also finished it quickly.

Just in time, Kelvin Teo, an engineering assistant, wanted to bring us out on a tour. He had to do some stuff first so we followed him to Major Operating Theater (MOT). We had to change into a gown and pants and went into the "Staff only" access to change. Then, we're in the operation theater. So cool. We could see a women giving birth but it was too early she wasn't in labour yet and was still under observation. Again he showed us different medical equipments used to perform surgery and alternating between showing us another OT where someone was undergoing knee replacement surgery. His knee was open and we could see the exposed knee, which is actually an implant and the op is finishing soon as soon as he's stitched up. Kelvin told us that they actually knock the knee out and blood would spurt out but we didn't get to see that.

Next we went to the Cardiac OT where they perform all the heart surgery. A patient was under going heart bypass surgery but we could'nt see much as the surgeons were busy. Then we went out of the MOT not before changing back to civilian clothes.

He then brought us to the different Intensive Care Units (ICU) where the patients that need more attention are placed. We went to the Neonatal ICU, there's where the premature babies are kept under observation. We saw little Aaron, who's born prematurely. He's so small. so cute. haha. And small Akrab who was born only 908grams, then another baby which is even smaller, which didn't have a name. before long I knew we will be going into the Surgical ICU, the place our dear friend Jordan was at. I walked past his bed he was in and remembered him there..

Soon, we're back at BME office and chatted with Faizah and Kelvin. They really made us feel comfortable working here. I'm more confident now and look forward to more days ahead working with them.

Day 1 9 March '09

Time 6:30 ~ 7:30am
Woke up shower and gets ready for the journey to National University Hospital. I don't know how long it would take to travel from home to NUH, so left at 7:30 for a 9:00am reporting time. Which is a good 1hr30mins. It turns out that I will need 1hr20mins to reach NUH busstop. Then another good 3mins walk from there to the Main Building.

Time 9:00am ~ 9:30am

I waited in the lobby for Kit Yee, my colleague for the next 5months ++. She turned out to be late. So I called the lady who we are supposed to meet, turns out she's on MC. On the phone was Li Xian, an engineer who later became the person who took us in and told us what to expect. I told her we're going to be late and Kit Yee came at 9:25am. We're now officially late of the first day of work.

9:30am ~ I lost track of time.

After that we went to get our name tags and claim our Kopitiam card at HR which entitles us to 20% off at the Kopitiam there. hehe. After getting all our "benefits" we went to the BME office for the first time. On a sidenote, it's neighbour to the mortuary. Haha. We're introduced to the staff there. My first impression was that they are okay except for some that looked stern and serious. But I guessed it was a Monday and work was piling during the weekends so had little time for scraps like us. So we placed our bags then Li Xian asked us to follow her to some place where she had to do her work. So it was a so called "guided tour" of the hospital. We went to an area where they are renovating and had to put on a safety gear, a hard hat. She had to supervise some people in the installation of an X-ray machine there. So the 2 of us are just extras. Standing around looking at people. We went back to BME office after that

I lost track of time ~ 12:xx pm

We are briefed on the some house rules and fire safety precautions and told of detailed staff involved in the hospital and the different divisions. [not to be written on report] It seems like lecture and I was quite sleepy. [/not to be written on report]

12:xx pm

Went to lunch to try our new cards. Had lunch then headed back to BME office. Time after lunch Followed Yan Xin, an assistant engineer and Li Xian to a laboratory where they recorded the equipments due for Preventive Maintainance (PM). So we were taught the basic stuff we're going to do some time in the future. It was at the MicroBiology lab. We're there for about 1hour. After that we went back to the BME office. This time it was work for us. We were given paper work to do. Yeah.. boring.. but it was experience. We get to learn how BME dept. keep track of the thousands of equipments in the hospital. They had a Medical Equipment Record (MER) where they list all the equipments in order and had codes which we'll get to learn soon.

5:4x pm
We finished the job very quickly. Kit Yee and me really worked well together and managed to do it very fast, before 6pm, our knock off time. Li Xian said before that we could'nt be able to finish by today, but we did it even before 6pm. So we just rested a few minutes til it was time to go off. That was basically the 1st day. Going home is a chore. I could take 3 buses and transfer a few busstops later but all 3 buses are so crowded. Reached home at 8..
